The Start of the Purly Shell Pirates

Welcome to Purly Shell! One of our goals this year is to start writing down our stories, and memories. But to get to the present there has to be a past. How did Purly Shell start?

Purly Shell was a concept that I started along with my mom when we were living in the northwest. Fiber Arts had always been a huge thing in my life, I’d taught myself to spin as a teenager after buying my first wheel and it just went from there. But unfortunately many yarn shops weren’t welcoming to spinners, or crocheters, or even young people. We realized there was a market for a ‘perfect to us’ shop. One that welcomed everyone, focused on all fiber arts, and put accessibility first.

Many years later we had relocated to Long Beach WA, and I wasn’t sure a shop would work there. But a friend told me, build it, it’ll happen. And we decided to risk it all. So with my mom’s retirement fund (who needs to retire anyway!) and a lot of hard work we started Purly Shell.

Our goal of a shop that people could come to and feel welcome and seen was realized but we weren’t done.

Build it, they’ll come, we needed people to help. At this time my nieces were still in high school life was insane and balancing a shop, a farm, and more was crazy. Then a few months after opening a person I’d met only online walked in.

The cosmos quaked, and the Purly Shell Pirates were born. Our first non shop adventure was me telling Danielle to grab her boots and go on a Romney adventure.

Through the years we’ve learned, adventured, added sheep, driven cross country multiple times, rearranged the shop, and braided, dyed, and twisted thousands of pounds of yarn and fiber. But more importantly we’ve spread the love for fiber, and encouraged, enabled and engaged thousands of people!

I’m glad you’re here to join in on the adventure!
