Every once in awhile we get a fleece that is just sheer magic. This was the case with Lisa’s fleece. Lisa was a Romeldale who came to us for a short time as a retirement home.
She was not especially sweet, but she was talkative and opinionated. She opened up gates, she set the other sheep on adventures, she demanded animal crackers and chin scratches.
So when Lisa was sheared, her fleece was this incredibly soft Romeldale in a warm chocolate. Romeldale are an American breed of sheep that were developed in California crossing Romney with Rambouillet. The fleece is bouncy, springy and filled with life. While it’s fine and downy it has the strength needed to be truly versatile.

We sent Lisa’s fleece to the mill blending it with silk and this spectacular roving came back. We sold a ton immediately, and then Danielle hoarded the rest envisioning a sweater. But along came Karie. She needed roving for a sweater. Danielle raided her stash and we made it happen!
This is what Karie says:
“In December 2021 I bought some blended Romedale silk roving from you from a sheep named Lisa. I spun it up and it created a beautiful soft lofty yarn. At the same time I frogged a sweater that I knit for my husband before we were married. It didn’t fit him and had some moth holes, but this commercial yarn was still nice. It was a lighter shade than the yarn from Lisa’s fleece. So in January 2023 I started knitting a new sweater for hubby using the frogged yarn and the yarn from Lisa’s fleece. I alternated rows, knitting one with the frogged yarn and the next with Lisa’s yarn. My kitty loved sleeping on the sweater while it was being knit. The two yarns blended beautifully and my hubby now has a new warm soft sweater to wear this holiday season!”
This is why we love Purly Shell, we get to share our creativity and see it expanded upon by you!
